International Sculpture Symposium, Hallmark II
Chau Doc, Vietnam
October 31 thru December 10, 2005

The Ministry of Culture and Information invited several artists to participate in an International Sculpture Symposium - An Giang Hallmark II. This is the largest sculpture symposia event held in Vietnam. The premise for the project is that sculptors from around the world will make a monumental size sculpture in 40 days out of marble or granite. This is among a series of activities happening in Chau Doc township, aiming at creating diverse sculptural works and providing the landscape with valuable artworks so that Chau Doc township can build a Sculpture Garden Park in the Sam Mountain tourist site.

An Giang province covers an area of 3,424 km2 with a population of 2,083,571 people. An Giang is situated in the southwestern Vietnam, bordering Cambodia, upstream of the Mekong Delta river with fertile rice paddies in the Tu Giac Long Xuyen region. It has several ethnic groups with different religions. It also occupies a That Son Range with green forests, beautiful waterfalls and cool lakes, etc. The province has a great deal of mausoleums, pagodas, temples bearing the hallmark of pioneers of south Vietnam such as Nguyen Huu Canh temple, Tay An pagoda, Thoai Ngoc Hau mausoleum, Cave Pagoda, Lady Xu Temple (Sam Mountain), and so on in Chau Doc township, which are unique, nationally-recognized cultural vestiges.

The closeness of ethnic groups’ (Chinese, Cham and Khmer) and Kinh people’s cultural aspects which are characterized by river life, creates unique cultural diversity. Many folk festivals are preserved as a precious property of the people of An Giang province, of which Lady Xu’s Birthday Festival – Sam Mountain is held in Chau Doc township with over 2 million visitors every year. With the cultural aspects in daily life of the people of Chau Doc township, there are floating fish cage villages, a floating market and a famous tourist attraction.

In 2003, the International Sculpture Symposium “An Giang Hallmark” I held in Chau Doc township left 36 sculptural works of 34 sculptors from 14 countries throughout the world. The cultural event created an important hallmark of the sculptors’ good hearts for Chau Doc township. The works are a priceless possession of Chau Doc people, which beautifies the natural landscape of the Sam Mountain tourist site. Chau Doc township hopes to have a Sculpture Garden Park of 100 sculptural works to create a cultural product site for tourists from home and abroad.
