First International Stone and Wood Sculpture Symposium
Penza, Russia

Carole traveled to Russia this year as one of 52 sculptors invited to participate in the First International Stone and Wood Sculpture Symposium – Inspiration Penza. The symposium, the largest European sculpture symposium in modern times, was a spectacular success, thanks to the great efforts of organizers Yury Tkachenko and Valentina Dusavitstaya and sponsor Konstantn Volkov, as well as the City of Penza and the Penza Art Museum/Savitsky Gallery.

From 10 – 30 September 2008, the sculptors created huge clouds of dust as they worked on their substantial blocks of Russian and Ukranian limestone, enjoyed the camaraderie of their fellow artists, the fabulous food, accommodations and hospitality provided by the Chystiye Prudi Hotel, as well as the nightly entertainment by first class musicians and singers (traditional, folk, opera, symphonic, pop, blues) and dancers.

The Penza Art Museum hosted an exhibition of works by the symposium sculptors throughout the month.

Sculpture created during the symposium will be permanently installed in Penza City Center and in the Legends Sculpture Park on the extensive grounds of the new resort complex, Pure Ponds.
