The First Puerto Vallarta International Sculpture Symposium (PVISS)
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
January 31 – February 13 2010

Carole co-organized and participated in the First Puerto Vallarta International Sculpture Symposium which took place January 31 thru February 13, 2010.

Crowds of visitors showed up daily to watch the sculptors as they worked on Puerto Vallarta's famed Malecon, the wide promenade that runs along the Pacific Ocean's shore.

Carol's sculpture, Memoria, was carved of cantera, a Mexican limestone. Shortly after the close of the symposium, it was acquired by the Peter Gray Museum, where it is permanently displayed on the museum's grounds at the University of Guadalajara.

The sculpture had a little mishap on its way to the museum. It, along with all of the other sculptures, were transported from the Malecon to the museum for the final exhibition and closing ceremonies, which included a special exhibition of the international sculptors' smaller scale works.

When Memoria was lifted with straps and while suspended horizontally to be loaded into the truck, it fell and broke into two pieces. When it arrived at the museum, the damage was assessed. It had broken off where the figure meets the base. One shoulder was slightly crushed and a few very shallow surface cracks were apparent.

The next day, hours before guests arrived at the museum for the exhibitions and closing ceremonies, Carole went to work. The sculpture was placed, without base, on the grass, and she carved a series of shallow, swirling lines that loosely followed the cracks. All of the swirls emanated from the shoulder, which had been sanded and damage was mitigated.

The sculpture, with her new "tattoo," does not hide the scar acquired on her journey or her lost beauty; instead she celebrates her history and the new version of herself and moves forward, with this day a "memoria."

The sculpture was half its size for the closing exhibition, but days later, Carole cut and fit, drilled and pinned, and reunited the figure with her base. She is slightly shorter than her original 150cm x 50cm x 50cm dimensions but most viewers have no idea that there was a mishap, and think that the "tattoo" was part of the original design.
